With the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) reporting the annual salary to be $40,350 for health information specialists, this puts HIM professionals around or above the national average.

It’s safe to say that one career does not always pay the same. You can be working in Texas with the same job title as an individual working in New York and make an extremely different salary. For a career in HIM you can expect the following factors to impact your salary:

Experience

Supervisors in HIM can be required to have two years of experience. HIM managers are often expected to have three to five years. Directors earn the highest HIM salary and typically have about ten years of experience.

There are HIM degree options at the associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s level. Earning an associate’s degree for HIM can be a great place to start your career. But for higher paying HIM jobs, employers typically look for those who have taken the initiative to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Depending on your career goals and what type of salary you seek to earn, earning a more advanced degree could be beneficial for you.

Certifications

Just as an advanced education can help you earn a higher salary in HIM, so can advanced certifications. Earning certifications is a way to show employers that you care about and are dedicated to your career. It also proves that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the job successfully.
